core1

In this course, you will examine yourself from a physical, mental, and energetic perspective, and learn the upaya (effective means) to move toward higher levels of health and conscious awareness.

At its heart, yoga is a process of transformation. But for transformation to occur, we need to develop a deep understanding of who we are on every level, and which tools and practices are the correct ones to help us evolve and move toward self-realization. Through the practices of asana, pranayama, seated meditation, and svadyaya (self-examination), you’ll learn how to sense and direct the flow of prana (life force); better understand and work with your Ayurvedic constitution; change your mind state by shifting energy in your body; and relay this ancient wisdom to your own students. You will also deepen your understanding of the Gunas and Doshas and their role in asana energetics, providing you with tools to realize your full potential as a yoga practitioner and teacher.Topics:

  • The ancient practice of svadyaya (self-study) on physical, mental, and energetic levels as a direct path toward self-realization.
  • The importance of upaya (choosing effective means and methods) in yoga as a way of moving toward higher levels of health and conscious awareness.
  • The connection between awareness and transformation, as it pertains to energy, diet, thought, and habitual patterns.

Understand what it means to practice Classical Yoga according to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Understand and experience the energetic body practices relating to the Nadis, Chakras, and Kundalini of Hatha Yoga. Top it off with an overview of Tantra, the profound vision of non-dual awareness at the heart of yoga. Practices include: asana, pranayama, bandha, mudra, visualization, and meditation.

Core Module 2: Sutras, Chakras, and Bliss

core-2blog

Core 2 focuses on the integration of embodied practice with self-inquiry and the study of the core texts of the yoga traditions. In this philosophy and practice intensive, we’ll look closely at two primary root texts of modern yoga: Patañjali’s Yoga Sutra and Svatmarama’s Hatha Yoga Pradipika. We will weave between historical context, close reading and discussion, and embodied practice. These two texts teach a full range of yoga practice, including ethics, meditation, mindfulness, and personal inquiry; asana, pranayama, energetic cultivation, and the awakening of the feminine embodied force called kundalini. Exploring the roots of Hatha Yoga in Tantra, we will also look briefly at an accessible tantric source text, Kṣemarāja’s Heart of Recognition.

Topics:

  • Bioenergetics of asana
  • The path of Classical Yoga, including meditation and embodied inquiry
  • In-depth engagement with Patañjali’s 8-Limb model
  • The Tantric roots of Hatha Yoga, with emphasis on the beautiful Śaiva Tantra tradition
  • Understanding Hatha Yoga’s subtle anatomy of nadi, cakra, and kundalini
  • Working with energy: asana, pranayama, and bandha as an integrated practice
  • Nervous system and trauma physiology, working safely with energy and attention

Core Module 3: Advanced Teaching Application

CORE3

Drawing from the knowledge and experiences learned in the other Core Modules, students put their skills to the test:

  • Refine classroom presence
  • Explore innovative sequencing concepts
  • Apply themes from Sutras, Hatha, and Tantra
  • Practice and mentor feedback on sequencing assignments
  • Learn how to see your students
  • Learn techniques to deal with limited mobility or injury

This module includes 10 hours of either therapeutics and/or Systems Anatomy, an experiential and embodied approach towards understanding and accessing the different physiological systems of the body to deepen the experience of asana and self awareness. From a place of wholeness and balance, learn how to teach and master more complex poses.

Students may repeat Core Curriculum modules for credit for a deeper understanding and experience. Content is teacher-driven and may vary from session to session (like college seminars), but the Yoga Alliance hours remain the same. Check course descriptions for more detailed information.
