I look forward to a long-term relationship with the Yoga Garden

This is hands down the best yoga studio I have ever been to.  I signed up for their 30 day intro package. ($65 unlimited yoga for one month- awesome deal!)  I thought if I could find one great vinyasa instructor I’d be satisfied.   I found 3 so far!  After my first experience at YG I was hooked.  Sonya taught, the room was a beautiful airy room with hardwood floors.  The students all seemed to take their practice very seriously.  Sonya’s knowledge and instruction were superior.  I felt immediately that this was a place that I can come and truly progress in my own practice.  The support was there and then some.  Since that class I’ve attended Brenna’s and Isabelle’s classes.
Though all 3 teachers teach vinyasa flow, all three have different styles and energies.  I enjoyed each class immensely.  All three had at one point or another come over to me and adjusted my posture and given me individual feedback and direction.  I love that.  Brenna makes sure to know the names of all her students.  Each instructor appears to really embody and understand the deeper philosophy of yoga as well as being incredibly knowledgable about the asanas and their benefits.  Really, I can go on and on about the instructors I’ve had, they are impeccable at what they do and how they communicate and connect with their students.
The place is really well kept.  It feels very clean and organized.  The front desk greeters are always kind and helpful.  There are 3 studios, though I have only been in 2 of them- both lovely.
I look forward to a long-term relationship with the Yoga Garden.  So happy I stumbled upon this place!!

Early bird. Worm.

This Sunday morning Daylight Savings Time ends, so before you go to bed on Saturday night, turn back your clocks an hour.

I have found this is a rare opportunity to make the positive change of going to bed earlier and rising earlier.  When I was in middle school one of my heros was Benjamin Franklin, who wrote in his autobiography that the “Early bird gets the worm.” Capitalism and competition subtracted from that quip, the truth is that for most of us there are fewer distractions and excuses, more energy and clarity, and more purpose and intention in our actions.  The yogis of old knew this too, and many traditions recommend an early morning practice. We’re here at 6 am and 7 am and would love to see you on the mat!

All the teachers I have tried are great!

Great studio!
I came here because I just moved to Lower Haight and wanted a local studio to go to.  They have a good intro deal – $49 for three weeks, which allows you to try several different teachers and figure out which you like best.  I also purchased their Yelp deal, which kept it affordable.  The classes are pretty small, which gives you the individual attention you’d need to get tips and improve your practice – making it worth the money!  Isabelle’s class is my favorite, but all the teachers I have tried are great!

To anyone who loves yoga …

Ok – since my last review, I have been attending Sonya Genel’s 12-1 Vinyasa class almost every day, and I have this to say about her and her classes:
I LOVE them! This is why.

1. Sonya is ALWAYS clear, concise, eloquent, and specific with her instructions.
2. Sonya’s teaching and practice focuses on alignment, both physical and mental/spiritual, which is an incredible foundation for everything else we do in class.
3. She never rushes through poses, but doesn’t go at a snail’s pace either – classes are always perfectly balanced between challenging, energetic, peaceful, and thought-provoking.
4. She is just a total gem of a person and is so obviously dedicated to her practice, the class, her students, and making this world a better and more mindful place!
5. Sonya’s dedication and unique, giving spirit create a safe space in every class she teaches for all students, of all levels and backgrounds.

As I mentioned in my first review, I am a teacher myself and therefore I come into any class with a heightened awareness of pedagogy and teaching practice.  Sonya’s thoughtfulness, dedication, individual accommodations, preparedness and level of professionalism can set an example for any teacher of any discipline.  She facilitates my own progress, as a physical and spiritual being, by helping me tune into my own teacher inside myself, which is the greatest gift any teacher could ever give me.  I HIGHLY recommend Sonya as a yoga teacher to anyone who loves yoga – or even to anyone who doesn’t YET know that they could love it!
