Teaching Yoga to Kids & Youth

Cator Shachoy is the founding director of Youth Yoga Dharma and the instructor of the Teaching Yoga to Youth 20-hour teacher training program.  She recently had this article about teaching yoga to youth published in Common Ground.

Check out her upcoming youth yoga teacher training at Yoga Garden here.  We also are offering a teacher training for kids yoga instructors this fall.

Yoga = Energy

One of the greatest benefits of my decision to take the Mysore practice/Ashtanga Training at Yoga Garden has been the tangible boost of energy that I have throughout the day.  I’m talking about the charge you can feel that makes it easier to walk, bike, sit, pay attention, get things done, stay awake at 2 pm without a cup of coffee, etc. It’s so tangible and beneficial, that this alone has motivated me to keep coming back. So, I had to observe, where does this come from and why does yoga help?

New at Yoga Garden: Anusara!

Anusara-Inspired Yoga Instructor at the Yoga Garden

Sean Haleen

Anusara yoga is a fusion of alignment oriented Iyengar and movent based Vinyasa yoga. Email: Thank you for all the love, support, …

To my friends and teachers at the Yoga Garden SF: Thank you for all the love, support, and wonderful community you provided me with throughout my pregnancy.  The prenatal classes had a huge impact on helping my pregnancy and childbirth to go so smoothly…During the final stage of birthing, I thought about all of you and summoned all your collective positive energy as I took a deep breath in and then pushed it and my baby out and into the world.  Sapna I., via email.

Yelp:…teachers are progressive, caring, and wise beyond their years.

I have bittersweet feelings about writing this review. Why? I want to keep Yoga Garden the hidden gem that it is. Yet, Buddha states the root of all suffering is attachment. So if I want to become the enlightened yogini I strive for, I shall embrace the change of growth. It is inevitable that Yoga Garden will grow.
My first class was yesterday and since I have received three emails asking how I perceived the class, tips on choosing the right yoga studio for me, and deals for new students. The teachers are progressive, caring, and wise beyond their years.
Enough said. It won me over. Now shhh… let’s keep it our little secret garden.

Where’s Iyengar?

With the frequency of  the Olympics and presidential elections, U.S. Iyengar instructors gather to share community and learn from their most senior teachers at their national convention.  This year, they meet in Portland, OR, from May 11-16.  As a result, many of the Iyengar teachers in San Francisco will not be teaching their classes during this time. more »

Yelp:… I promise you it’s 100% truth.

My new yoga home. Thank you yoga garden teachers for being the most awesome and down-to-earth practitioners who constantly wow me with their knowledge, humility, humor and visible love for their work and students. You guys are amazing! It’s like pinch me, I must be dreaming this studio is super yogified in the best way possible.  Previously I was a Vinyasa, Hatha, and Anusara girl, and I still love those practices, but Iyengar blows my mind! Muscle is one thing, but disciplined attention to correct form take it to a whole new level – Ryan De Matteo is a fabulous Iyengar teacher.  Can’t say enough good things about Nathalie Cox, Isabelle Grotte, Brenna Geehan, and Megan Lipsett.  Wonderful! Their motto is ‘The only thing we care about more than yoga is you” and as a student of theirs, I promise you it’s 100% truth.

Authentic Spirituality: Frederick Franck

The faculty and staff at Yoga Garden SF are currently in the process of articulating a code of ethical conduct for the community.  One issue that has come up for discussion is something we are calling “pseudo-spirituality” vis-a-vis “authentic spirituality”, without falling into the dogma-trap of religion. I thought I’d share this article to help articulate the difference that we strive to embody. more »
