Which style of yoga?

Chad Balch Iyengar yoga instructorby Chad Balch

“…we are all unique, and I recognize that there is no “one size fits all” solution for anything that is important in life, especially when it comes to personal evolution. I was moved by Eric Shaws article “35 Moments” in the latest edition of Yoga Journal. In just a few pages, Eric manages to convey the vast landscape of yoga stretching back thousands of years, framed in terms of prominent events, teachers, and achievements. So what I do is just a drop in this ocean of yoga. Well, it may be a tiny drop, but its great to be a part of that ocean.”

Tele-seminar revisited.

David Nelson PortraitWow, what an experience.  Yoga Garden just hosted its first webinar this Wednesday, and it was simultaneously a great success and a comedy of errors.

First the success. Panelists Richard Rosen, Chase Bossart, Sean Feit, Megan Lipsett, Chrisandra Fox, and I discussed the directions to take a maturing yoga practice.  I was so impressed by the insight and articulation that my fellow panelist brought to the discussion.  And the questions posed by our participants were equally valuable and interesting.  One audience member commented, “..,it was like tuning into NPR.” We were all so encouraged by the event that we will be sure to continue offering these opportunities and improving them.

Back to [Yoga] School

David Nelson PortraitIt’s true.  Although the long days of summer will last for another month, from kindergartens through the ivied halls of universities, doors are opening again to the young minds of America…… now what’s that got to do with Yoga?

Standing on a commitment to cura personalis, artful and intelligent instruction, and rigorous practice, Yoga Garden SF has quietly  transformed from a small, neighborhood yoga studio into a small, community-centered yoga school, offering programs that provide structured advancement of your practice, opportunities to pursue careers in the industry, and programs for the continuing education of yoga professionals.

So back to school means something special to us now, because our yoga community and yoga practices reside in a context of continuing growth. Whether you are taking classes once or twice a week, learning how to give birth mindfully, learning to be a yoga teacher,  learning how to teach kids yoga, or learning how to open your own creativity through your yoga practice, your participation and energy are helping to feed this community of growth. Welcome back to school!

Foggy August

OK; I’ve lived here for over 30 years, and I’m really over talking about the fog. But, please, it’s really hard to remember that it’s summer if you’re on the western side of this City. I just got back from my first vacation in about a decade, and I have to recommend it for everyone.  It’s like yoga, meditation, or other mindfulness practices; you get to step off the treadmill, get your head out of the fog, and look at your life and the world around you anew. So, vacate, retreat, go get some UV rays (limited) somewhere while it’s still summer.

I’m really excited to invite you to an upcoming event at the Garden. Six members of our Advanced Studies faculty will be holding a tele-seminar on Wednesday, August 18 at 4-5 pm.  Here is a chance to talk with some leaders of thought in the field of yoga and meditation.  Real master teachers, academics, and practitioners who have some good ideas about where you go with a regular practice. And you don’t have to trek across town to participate–come by web or phone. See the details below.

New at the Garden — Core Yoga

with Maura Tibbs

Core Yoga is a challenging and fast-paced one hour core conditioning class, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am to 10:00 am. Pilates mat exercises are taught to develop strength and tone, while standing yoga postures are incorporated to improve your balance and flexibility. Although an upbeat and fast moving class, attention to correct alignment is key, as well as targeting specific core muscle groups.

Cynthia Bates: …”it could be heroin!”

Iyengar yoga instructor Cynthia Bates posts from Pune.

Water rationing will continue along with periodic power cuts (most of the power here is hydroelectric) but the rains have finally come. The noise levels in the surrounds have dimmed at night replaced by the steady lull of rain drops and the temperatures have dropped to a new low of 77 degrees :-0 I actually got completely under the covers last night!

While I no longer feel the need to hoard water, I am now on the look-out for all the waterborne diseases that come with the season: typhoid, dyptheria, cholera and of course dengue fever which has me slathering insect repellant on every time I leave the house. Sounds charming doesn’t it? But truly, it is beautiful as the rain slows things down, clears the pollution (temporarily) from the air and brings a wide gaze to the world as if you were looking at things from the outside corners of your eyes through a mirror.

This morning was Women’s class with Abhi and Guruji. Another soaring sequence that left me breathless. The classes, which are twice a week on Wednesday and Saturday, have built upon each other so that each one takes you to a higher and higher place. As always, Guruji reigned from his upside position over a prop for most of the class, calling Abhi over periodically to make her go up into the next pose so she could feel the instructions in her own body. We started with numerous full arm balances (handstands) and ended in twisted standing poses. I was so focused on the class that it wasn’t until 3/4 in when I bent over to Uttanasana (standing forward bend) that I noticed Geetaji lying in Supta Baddha Konasana right behind me! My heart stopped for a moment and I almost cried I was so happy to see her in the practice room. I am holding out no expectations that she will actually come and teach a class, but please God, just one pranayama class this week!? We walked out feeling electric with legs like noodles. I expect to see a lot of people lying over bolsters at the 4pm practice session.

Shockingly, no hot plans for Saturday night for me….but it’s Guru Purnima tomorrow: “The full moon day in the Hindu month of Ashad (July-August) is observed as the auspicious day of Guru Purnima, a day sacred to the memory of the great sage Vyasa.” On this day we honor our teachers, or Guru’s. There will be a celebration at the Institute and Guruji will talk for awhile. I am looking forward to it!

I was reading the Yoga Sutras yesterday and came upon a description of Brahmacharya (continence or celibacy) which includes continence or abstinence from all sensual pleasure. The way it was decribed was that you feel the sensations, either good or bad, but that you don’t crave or become averse to the sensation. I’m mentioning this, because I continue to fight my cravings for large bowls of salad greens. But as my mom has always said, “it could be heroin!”

Hope you are all well and surviving the summer fog. much love, cynthia
