Tea Time with Marisa Toriggino

Healthful, tasty and easy to make:

Tea, Anyone?

I love to drink tea and learned from my former mother in law in Gujarat, India how to make the best Chai.  The best advice she gave me was to use the freshest ingredients and to crush all of the herbs thoroughly before putting them into the pot of water.  Try and get some good black tea from an Indian grocery store (there is one in the Fillmore Center).

I make this during our Prenatal Teacher Training program (starting June 7th) and all of Yoga Garden smells like (the best of) India!

Doulas

A doula is a labour coach, a non-medical person who assists a woman before, during, or after childbirth, as well as her partner and or family, by providing information, physical assistance and emotional support.  The provision of continuous support during labour by doulas has been associated with improved maternal and fetal health and a variety of other benefits.

At her recent workshop, Helping Women Heal from A Traumatic or Negative Birth, Gabby Yates and I were forturnate enough to meet some wonderful doulas.  We would like to recommend Carmen, Lucy and Ilka to all of you.  I’m providing their information below.  I’d like to encourage you to learn more about doulas, and to conduct careful interviews before making a final decision. more »

…excited to come back…

After participating in prenatal yoga with Gabby for several months during my pregnancy, it was wonderful to come back to the Yoga Garden after my daughter’s birth to take part in Mom and Baby yoga. The first few weeks postpartum were tough and isolating; I was so excited to come back to the yoga studio after six weeks away and reconnect with other women who had been my peers during my pregnancy. Gabby is a gifted teacher who creates a warm and welcoming space for new mothers in her yoga class. She supported me and my classmates not only in recovering  physically from birth but also in dealing with all the challenges new mothers face, from breastfeeding to sleep deprivation and beyond. While I worked on opening my overworked shoulders and neck, my newborn daughter had the opportunity to meet other babies and experience the world outside our home for the first time. I’m so pleased that I had the opportunity to ease into motherhood with Gabby as my guide. - Melissa J. via email
