Stirring Up the Shakti: Backbends from the Belly Center
May 14 @ 2:15 pm - 4:15 pm
This month honors the mother, the earth, and the goddess Shakti. Shakti means “sacred force” or “creative principle,” and is the personification of divine feminine creative power. It is the all-pervading energy of change, cosmic existence and liberation.
Taoists believe the universe is a great conduit of energy, with the energy center of the body residing slightly below the navel. This “Sea of Energy” is a source of power, and is considered the seat of intuition. It originates from the middle, and coordinates the rest of the body from the source, the center where in yogic philosophy, Shakti resides.
This session will take us into a deep and gentle practice of backbends that lengthen the spine from this energy center. One of the notable benefits of backbends is relief of anxiety and stress. By opening up the front of your body, you can also access your creative energy center, where intuition thrives. With mindful movement, backbends can enhance emotional and spiritual vitality, and help eliminate chronic anxiety.
Backbends that are not balanced with skillful action and wisdom may immobilize the sacroiliac joint and compress the lumbar spine, causing significant harm. In this workshop, we will practice the proper form required to lengthen the spine up and down so you can work with ease, rather than fighting to push your body open and create injury. Cora will show functional anatomy tips and how to work in yoga poses to maintain this harmony.
