History of Women in Yoga with Eric Shaw

Sunday, May 20th 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Women were ancient Tantric gurus, and yogini cults were important in India’s Middle Ages.Women were also “early adapters” of modern yoga when it bloomed in America in 1893.
They gambled reputations in the Victorian era to help Swami Vivekananda and traveled to India to support its freedoms and become monks. They lead in innovation and changed the way we see yoga, too.In the 1920s, Mollie Stack invented yoga-flow before K. Pattabhi Jois and his teacher, and in the late 40s, the great Indra Devi, made yoga Hollywood-hip.Now, more women do yoga than men, and yoga promises healing for the battle of the sexes.

Explore new ideas and have good conversations in this visual and scholarly exploration of how women have re-vitalized yoga through the ages.May 20, 2012 from 3:00-5:00 p.m.Early bird registration $15 through May 19, $20 day of lecture.

  1. I am born & raised in India & enjoyed reading your article & I have seen the strength in mom & my mother in -law,worked hard, stayed rooted to raise the family, morally support the spouses & entertained guests. They never complained about their fatigue & never unwelcome d any guest,no matter what time they arrived with their suit case or problems.I grew up that way & moved to United States with my Surgeon Husband, who had to go through Residency before he could start practice.I was always busy raising my three beautiful children & waiting for my husband, sitting in the window, some times next morning 2A.M.
The times were very hard to survive for Minorities 1966.I did my yoga practice or prayers, which I learned during my childhood.Today, with God’s grace all children are following the path of Yoga & prayers.Woman is the foundation of family, she has to be deep rooted, struggles, storms come & go.I had a vision to see my family strong, educated, good hear ted & having faith on God.My daughter-in-laws & My daughter followed that path & I am 71 years old, teaching yoga & studying as a student regularly.I can’t attend on Memorial day weekend Seminar,Family & professional commitment, but will definitely visit next time.I used to teach psychology in high school in India,& always wanted to back my teaching.God has helped me to fulfill my dream.Yoga is union with yourself,I felt complete after practicing & practicing.I am a humble servant of God & want to convey to people, children are the back bone of this country or any other country, focus on your families with the practice of yoga, surrender to Higher Power & He will take care of our problems.Strength comes from inside, that happens with spirituality & heart opens with Meditation & we feel loved & the whole world is like a beautiful Garden. Enjoy Life each day. Blessings & Namaste. Veena
