E-RYT 500 | Teacher | Lead Teacher Trainer
Karen is a NYC native, and has spent many years living and traveling abroad. She has been teaching yoga and mindfulness for more than a decade, and teaches with an emphasis on healing the body and mind, connecting in community, and deepening awareness and insight. She is committed to inclusiveness and diversity, and believes that yoga, at its best, is a way of coming home to oneself. She is an E-RYT 500 teacher trainer, and teaches virtual classes at Yoga Garden, and also in the 200-hour and 300-hour teacher training programs. Karen is also a lead teacher and co-creator of Yoga Garden’s Trauma-Informed Teacher Training, and a professional Life & Leadership Coach certified by the International Coach Federation.
Karen is extensively trained in Buddhist meditation in the Theravada tradition. Her studies include many years of study in trauma-informed yoga and meditation practice with Sean Feit Oakes, as well as additional training in trauma-informed modalities like Internal Family Systems, Somatic Experiencing, and Nonviolent Communication. Karen works regularly with yoga students and coaching clients who have serious health conditions and/or who deal with symptoms of complex or systemic trauma.
Karen is also a professional writer, and has written for the past two decades on yoga and related subjects for multiple publications including Yoga Journal, Yoga International, and the San Francisco Bay Guardian. Her column Examined Life currently runs in the online magazine 48 Hills. Karen co-founded the organization Heart and Hand Yoga, which leads international retreats that combine yoga, adventure travel, and service.
