What is reiki?
Reiki is a hands-on healing art that originated in Japan. The word Reiki means Universal
Life Force Energy. This essential life energy, or ki (also named ‘chi’ in Chinese or
‘prana’ in Hindu) flows through us, and is what causes us to be alive. If this is energy is
flowing properly, we are healthy and happy; when our life force energy is depleted, or
blocked, we are more prone to feel stress or get sick.
By transferring life energy to the body, Reiki helps restore balance and promote its
natural ability to heal. The Reiki practitioner places their hands on or above the body,
allowing healing energy to go where it is most needed. The practitioner doesn’t transfer
his own energy to the recipient, but rather connects to the Universal source of energy and
channels this energy to the recipient. After a treatment, Reiki recipients are usually very
relaxed, filled with a feeling of peace and well-being.
Reiki not only treats our physical body but also creates many beneficial effects to the
whole person. In fact, it is a powerful approach to heal the body, mind and spirit. Just like
yoga is thought of a spiritual practice, Reiki can also help guide us through life, providing
insight to who we really are.
How can reiki help?
We all have experienced stress, illness, or been confronted by challenges that affected us
in some way. Here are some instances where Reiki can help…
– If you have a medical condition or suffering from chronic pain (back pain for
example), had surgery or other health treatment, reiki can help reduce pain and
assist in the healing process. Reiki also works with other medical or therapeutic
techniques to promote recovery or relieve side effects.
– If you feel emotionally overwhelmed or are going through a difficult time, Reiki
can help relax, process and release emotions. In turn, this can help you calmly
cope with the situation and move on with your life.
– If you want to change your life but don’t know how, or if you feel ‘stuck’, Reiki
can help see more clearly, connect with yourself to create the kind of life you
want. It can remove blockages allowing you to follow your path.
– And if you are simply tired, stressed or anxious, or have trouble sleeping, Reiki
will help you feel relaxed, calm and serene. Reiki is an excellent tool for stress
reduction and deep relaxation effects.
Reiki is supportive of your well-being on all levels and it can be combined with other
healing practices and disciplines, like yoga.
What to expect during and after a treatment
During the treatment, you will be lying comfortably, eyes closed. The Reiki practitioner
will lay their hands on your body (very light pressure) or slightly above. He/she will hold
the position for 3 to 8 minutes (or longer if needed) and move to another area. You may
experience a sensation of heat or cold, tingling, have emotions coming up, see colors, fall
asleep or… nothing at all! Whatever you’ll be feeling, be assured that Reiki will find its
way through your body.
The energy will direct itself wherever it is needed – body part, organ, chakra, etc. You
had knee surgery two years ago and your knee still hurts? Don’t be surprised if your
practitioner ‘works’ on your knee, without you having previously told him/her to do so.
Reiki is an intuitive process and the session is an opportunity for the practitioner and
recipient to connect to other sources of information.
Right after a Reiki session, take time to relax and drink a lot of water – energy has moved
and water will help your body detox. Like with any healing practice, the effects can be
immediate or reveal themselves over time. You may continue to feel relaxed, or have a
new burst of energy. You may find that you have new insights, thoughts or feelings – this
is a normal part of the healing process. Gently acknowledge or explore what a session
may bring. You may want to share this insight at your next session with your Reiki
